Description

Since leaded petrol was removed from fuelling stations, classic car owners either have to use unleaded or convert their cars to run on a different type of fuel. In tests, small diesel cars without SCR, such as the 2016 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 TDI, have been found to be as toxic as a fully laden lorry. In measurements taken by Leeds University’s Institute of Transport Studies, the Polo emitted 1.2g of nitrogen dioxide per kilometre travelled, which is the same as a fully laden diesel lorry with a 13-litre engine. Modern technology such as SCR and AdBlue is still found mainly in bigger, more expensive diesel models. That is because the system is both too large and too expensive to squeeze into small runabouts. AdBlue, the blue liquid that’s keeping your car green. Confusing, I know. AdBlue is a solution injected into the exhaust of diesel vehicles to neutralise harmful nitrogen oxide emissions. AdBlue injection is a standard feature on most diesel vehicles made post-September 2015 as a result of the Euro 6 emissions standards. You'll find you need to top up the Adblue tank about every 4000 - 5000 miles. The MMI will tell you you're getting low about 1500 miles before it runs out so you get ample warning, but don't leave it as when it runs out the car stops. The cheapest source of Adblue found so far is Morrisons but you can get it at Halfords, most garages and petrol station forecourts and some even have Adblue filling facilities. As a last resort an Audi (or indeed any) main dealer will fill it for you but it's one **** of an expensive option.

On modern cars, manufacturers are making it much easier to get at the Adblue® tank, but on older models, you may struggle. If your diesel vehicle is fitted with an AdBlue system it will be automatically be injected into your exhaust as you drive along. Similarly, to the fuel entering the engine, the AdBlue tank will continue to be utilised until it runs empty. Running the tank empty is not recommended and will cause poor running, it could even prevent the vehicle from starting. Depending on the layout of your car’s engine, Adblue® may be quite difficult to top up and refill, with the tank often located in a hard-to-reach area of the car.Our petrol and diesel fuel system cleaners are supplied in 250ml and 500ml sizes. The smaller 250ml version contains two doses / shots and the 500ml provides 4 shots. Over about 2,000 miles of mainly commuting in three months, my average fuel consumption using the Redex fuel system cleaners was 31.1mpg. My driving circumstances in that time have been a pretty representative example of my usual activities, so superficially it looks like a 1mpg improvement since using Redex. Yes, you can use Redex fuel system cleaners on any vehicle fitted with an exhaust treatment system such as Adblue® or a lean NOx trap as they treat different parts

Also, if your tank is larger or smaller than 50 litres you can still use the recommended dosage with same level of performance being achieved. As I outlined in previous reports, the type of fuel additive that I’ve been using is a fuel system cleaner rather than an octanebooster. The goal isn’t to turn regular unleaded into premium unleaded by increasing the car’s octane number, but simplyto give all the tiny pipes and injectors a thorough clean so they can do their thing without being clogged up. The Redex AdBlue 5L works by breaking down harmful mono-nitrogen oxides in the exhaust into harmless nitrogen and oxygen. This chemical reaction happens in the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system of your car, reducing the amount of harmful exhaust gas emitted into the environment. Adblue® (also known as diesel exhaust fluid) is a fluid which reduces harmful NOx emissions from your car’s exhaust by converting them into nitrogen and steam.Fuel additives have been a staple of car care for decades – you even used to be able to get a shot of Redex added to your tank at the petrol station when you filled up.

Given that your engine creates dozens of explosions every single second, there’s a lot of combustion going on under your bonnet. With any burning of fuel, there will be deposits and debris that forms. Sometimes it’s obvious, like the ash that forms when you burn a log in a fireplace. Other times, like in your car’s engine, these deposits are microscopic, but the principle is the same. Over time, these deposits build up and affect your ability to keep burning the fuel properly. If you happen to run out of AdBlue while driving, the engine’s power and performance will be reduced. The car does this to prevent any potential damage to the system occurring. Should this happen it is recommended that you immediately drive to the nearest service station where AdBlue is available and refill the tank. Since May, I’ve been recording my fuel economy every time I fill up the tank – manually noting down the litres added and mileage covered, rather than relying on the car’s trip computer – and adding a dose of Redex to the tank. Redex Lead Replacement maintains good engine performance by stopping valve seat recession, so it protects the fragile components within classic engines. It’s also safe to use other Redex products, such as our Petrol System Cleaner, in a classic car, and this help will keep it in the very best condition, removing harmful deposits to help improve engine life.If you have a question about our products or want to catch up on the latest news and goings on from us, get involved in the conversation in our Redex Club Facebook group. People who have never had a diesel vehicle running AdBlue before may be surprised by warning lights for AdBlue solution, though some will never top-up the tank at all. Dealerships will often top-up the AdBlue as part of an annual service, meaning vehicles that do not cover many miles will unlikely empty the tank between services (only a tiny amount of the fluid is used in comparison to diesel). Some high-mileage drivers carry 1-litre emergency bottles of AdBlue in the boot of their car, safe in the knowledge that should they need to fill the system at short notice, they will be able to do so. The fluid is corrosive, so some car companies do not recommend this. AdBlue and your car’s warranty What is the difference between the Professional DPF Cleaner and Complete Diesel System Cleaner products? Garages should refill AdBlue as part of a diesel car’s routine servicing. However, it’s possible to refill a tank of AdBlue yourself.

The inability for manufacturers to easily reduce the emissions of small diesel engines with the addition of AdBlue systems has led to an overall decline in the number of small diesel cars on the market, the majority of superminis and smaller cars now being driven by economical turbocharged petrol engines and/or hybrid powertrains. Does my car use AdBlue? Each Redex bottle clearly shows how many shots it contains on the front label, with easy guide ‘shot’ marking on the side. Adding more than one shot of Redex won’t do any harm to your car and can give you a more intensive clean, so don’t worry if your pouring isn’t exact. The car’s driver information display screen should flash up warnings, much asit would if fuel or windscreen washer fluid were low. AdBlue has been designed to minimise nitrogen oxide emissions. By injecting AdBlue into the exhaust, it neutralises most of the nitrogen oxide gas. The reduces tailpipe emissions and allows cars to pass increasingly stringent emissions tests without drastic hardware updates. AdBlue is a cost-effective, simple and surprisingly capable solution without resorting to much more extreme engineering that would vastly increase diesel vehicle prices. Why You May Need AdBlue Failing to act on these warnings will ultimately result in the car refusing to start until the AdBlue tank is filled. Can drivers refill AdBlue themselves? While you’ll rarely have to worry about topping up Adblue®, it’s important to know what it is and how to fill it up in case you ever run out. One of the latest techniques used to clean up diesel emissions is known as selective catalytic reduction (SCR). A liquid is used to treat exhaust gases and remove harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides(NOx), of which nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is the most harmful. Redex System Cleaner (Petrol and Diesel)– Use whenever you fill up the tank, or every other time you fill up, depending on mileage and the age of the car. It can reduce emissions by up to 80% in diesel engines. Car manufacturers have to meet certain standards regarding emissions, and an EU directive issued in September 2014 made Adblue® tanks a legal requirement on all new diesel cars.
